Custom Screen-Printed T-Shirts:
What You Can Create with InkWorx
Screen printing is the most established method in custom apparel — and for good reason. It produces vibrant, durable prints at volume, handles everything from a single-color logo to a multi-color graphic, and works across a wide range of garments and fabrics. Here's what's actually possible when you work with InkWorx.
How Screen Printing Actually Works
Screen printing pushes ink through a fine mesh screen onto a garment using a squeegee. Each color in a design requires its own screen, which is why color count is a primary factor in pricing. The method produces results that are difficult to match with any other decoration technique: rich color saturation, a soft hand feel after curing, and prints that hold up through hundreds of washes without cracking or fading.
The process is mechanical and repeatable, which makes it ideal for orders where consistency across every piece matters. A batch of 144 t-shirts will look identical because the same screen, the same ink, and the same press produce every unit. For a full breakdown of what happens between order approval and final delivery, see our post on how screen printing setup and production actually work.
Worth knowing: Screen printing is the most cost-efficient method at medium-to-high quantities. Per-unit cost drops significantly as volume increases, making it the standard choice for businesses, teams, and events ordering 24 pieces or more.
The Range of Products You Can Create
Screen printing works across a broader range of products than most clients expect. The core product is a t-shirt, but that covers an enormous variety of styles, cuts, weights, and brands.
- 01T-shirts — the full spectrum. Unisex, women's fitted, youth, long-sleeve, v-neck, tri-blend, heavyweight, soft-hand, fashion-fit. Brands include Gildan, Bella+Canvas, Next Level, Comfort Colors, and Port Authority, among others. Each has different weight, feel, and price point. We'll help you pick the right blank for your project and budget.
- 02Fleece and sweatshirts. Crewneck sweatshirts and pullover hoodies screen print beautifully. If you're producing a set of branded fleece for a team or a staff uniform program, screen printing delivers the same sharp, vibrant result you'd get on a tee — at a comparable per-unit cost.
- 03Performance and moisture-wicking shirts. Athletic fabrics require water-based or discharge inks to prevent cracking and maintain breathability. We handle performance-fabric orders regularly for gyms, sports teams, and outdoor organizations. Just note the garment type when you submit your quote request so we can spec the right ink system.
- 04Tote bags, aprons, and accessories. Screen printing isn't limited to garments. Canvas tote bags, canvas aprons, and flat fabric accessories all take ink well and are common add-ons to apparel orders. If you're building a branded kit — shirts, bags, and accessories — we can produce all of it with the same artwork and the same ink colors.
as much as the design does.
Design Options: Colors, Placements, and Finishes
Where clients often underestimate screen printing is in the range of design options it supports. This isn't a method limited to simple one-color logos on white shirts — though it does that exceptionally well. Here's what the full range looks like:
- 1 to 8 spot colors, each mixed to your exact Pantone specification
- Underbase printing for dark garments (a white base coat ensures colors pop on black, navy, charcoal, and other darks)
- Multiple placement locations: front chest, full front, full back, left chest, right chest, sleeve, hem
- Specialty inks: metallic, glitter, puff (raised), high-density (dimensional), glow-in-the-dark
- Discharge printing for a soft, vintage feel on 100% cotton — ink replaces the dye rather than sitting on top
- Simulated process printing for photorealistic designs on light garments

Who Screen Printing Is Right For
Screen printing's versatility and volume efficiency make it the right choice across a wide range of buyers and project types. Here's where it performs best:
Businesses and brands ordering staff shirts, branded uniforms, customer giveaways, or trade show merchandise. Screen printing delivers professional results at per-unit costs that make large-scale programs viable.
Sports teams, clubs, and recreational leagues needing matching shirts or spirit wear. Consistent color across a full roster is exactly what screen printing is built for.
Events — 5K fundraisers, corporate events, festivals, family reunions, school spirit days. Event shirts are a natural use case: single design, defined quantity, one-time production run.
Schools, booster clubs, and PTAs ordering spirit wear, homecoming shirts, or fundraiser apparel. We work regularly with Louisiana schools and are familiar with the timeline pressures and quantity variability that come with school orders.
Nonprofits, faith communities, and community organizations producing branded shirts for programs, volunteers, or awareness campaigns. Volume pricing works in your favor here, and we'll help you keep the per-unit cost within budget.
Minimum order: InkWorx screen printing orders start at 12 pieces per design, per placement. Per-unit pricing drops at the 24, 48, 72, and 144-piece tiers. If your quantity is near a threshold, we'll show you both options so you can decide whether the additional pieces are worth the savings.

All production happens at our studio in Gonzales, Louisiana. There's no outsourcing, no third-party contract printers, no hand-offs to facilities you've never heard of. Every order is handled by the same team from setup through shipping.
Before any order goes to production, you receive a digital proof showing exact placement, size, and ink colors. Nothing prints until you approve it in writing. If something needs to change — a size adjustment, a placement shift, a color correction — we address it before the press runs, not after.
Every completed order goes through a four-checkpoint quality control process: print accuracy, color consistency, placement alignment, and garment condition. Pieces that don't meet standard don't ship. If something arrives and isn't right, we make it right — that's not a marketing claim, it's how we operate.
Standard production runs 10 to 12 business days from proof approval. Rush timelines are available when capacity allows. For a full overview of what happens between your order approval and delivery, the InkWorx resource guide covers every step of the process.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the minimum order quantity for custom screen-printed t-shirts?
InkWorx screen printing starts at 12 pieces per design, per placement. Per-unit pricing drops at standard volume tiers: 24, 48, 72, and 144+ pieces. If you're near a tier threshold, we'll show you what the cost difference looks like at both quantities so you can make an informed decision.
How many ink colors can my design include?
We print designs with up to 8 spot colors. Each color requires its own screen, so color count directly affects setup cost. Most logos and graphic designs work well in 1 to 4 colors. Full-color photographic or gradient-heavy artwork is better suited to DTG or DTF printing — we'll tell you upfront if your design is a better fit for a different method.
Can you screen print on dark-colored shirts?
Yes. Printing on dark garments requires an underbase — a white ink layer printed first — so that colors appear true on the fabric rather than being absorbed by the dark dye. The underbase adds one screen and one pass to the process, which is reflected in pricing, but the color results on a black or navy shirt match what you'd get on white. We'll spec this automatically when your garment color calls for it.
How long does a custom screen printing order take?
Standard production is 10 to 12 business days from proof approval. The clock starts after you approve the proof, not when you place the order. Rush timelines of 5 to 7 business days are available at an additional fee and subject to current capacity. If you have a firm event date, tell us at quote time and we'll confirm whether your timeline is achievable before you commit.
Do I need vector artwork to place a screen printing order?
Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF with outlined text) are the production standard and add no setup cost. If your logo exists only as a JPG or PNG, we can quote a vector redraw — typically a one-time fee that makes your artwork production-ready for every future order. Submitting whatever you have is always the right starting point; we'll tell you exactly what it needs and what that costs before anything else moves forward.
