DTF stands for direct-to-film. The process works like this: your design is printed onto a special release film using a dedicated inkjet printer and CMYK inks with a white ink base layer. A hot-melt adhesive powder is then applied to the wet ink and cured with heat. The result is a flexible, full-color transfer that can be heat-pressed onto almost any fabric.

Unlike screen printing, there are no screens to burn and no color separation costs. Unlike direct-to-garment (DTG), the transfer is applied via heat press rather than printed directly onto the garment, which makes it viable on fabrics that DTG can't handle β€” including nylon, polyester, and blended performance fabrics that would otherwise reject water-based DTG inks.

DTF has no setup cost per color and handles unlimited colors in a single pass.
  • 02DTG vs DTF. DTG prints directly onto the garment β€” no transfer step. It's ideal for one-off or very small run cotton pieces. The limitation is fabric type: DTG struggles on polyester, treated fabrics, and anything that doesn't absorb water-based ink well. DTF transfers work on those materials without issue, and the output is more consistent across large runs.
  • 03Embroidery vs DTF. Embroidery produces a raised, tactile result that reads as premium and holds up to heavy use.   • You need a small quantity β€” under 24 pieces β€” and screen printing setup costs don't make sense
  • Your garment is polyester, nylon, or a synthetic blend that doesn't work well with DTG inks
  • You need to hit a specific placement area (sleeve, pocket, side seam) where embroidery or screen printing aren't practical
  • You want a result that's full-color on a dark garment without the heavy feel of a traditional plastisol screen print
  • You're working with athletic or performance apparel that needs a decoration method flexible enough to move with the fabric

The flip side: DTF isn't the best choice when you need the matte, integrated look that a quality screen print produces on cotton, or the texture and dimensional quality that embroidery brings to a corporate uniform.
