When you request embroidered apparel, the very first step — before a single thread is placed — is converting your logo into a specialized stitch file. This process is called digitizing. It is the reason embroidery requires a setup fee that printing does not, and it is the most misunderstood part of the embroidery process. Understanding what digitizing is, what it costs, and why it matters will help you order with confidence and avoid the most common embroidery surprises.

Why Every Embroidery Order Starts with Digitizing

Embroidery machines do not read standard image files. A screen printer might work from a PDF or PNG, but an embroidery machine reads a proprietary stitch file — usually in a format like DST, PES, or EMB. That file does not just describe your logo's colors and shapes. It tells the machine exactly where each needle entry point goes, in what order stitches should be sewn, how thread tension should be set, and where to trim between sections.
